Building intercultural competence, curiosity and confidence

Programs

A needs analysis is performed prior to in-class time. Each program is then tailored to the needs of the participant(s) and to the requirements of the client organization.

Our training philosophy begins with the assumption that all activities must be directly of value to the learner. The interests and concerns of participants provide the program core around which all activities are based. Research and our experience tells us that a wide variety of brief, relevant exercises best engage the learner. Training sessions further develop knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Expatriate Relocation
For relocating expatriates and, if applicable, their families, this program presents a mixture of work-related and family-related topics based on client needs. See sample program segments.

Business Traveller / Rotational Employee / Head Office Staff
Working across cultures can take the form of a business trip, a rotational assignment or providing remote support from head office staff. Intercultural communication skills are core to the effectiveness of employees in these roles.

Children / Youth Programs
Our innovative, integrated family relocation program has the family together for certain program segments but mainly has Ellen with the children in a nearby room to present material in an age-appropriate manner.

Education Consulting
The expatriate family is assisted in finding the optimal school situation for their children. An overview of the local school system is provided. Family questions regarding special interests and needs are addressed. While most clients seek support on finding an appropriate school match in Calgary, advice can also be provided to global situations.

Leading a Multi-Cultural Team
Following the presentation of current research, we have a facilitated discussion on such topics as effective communication, persuasion, disagreement, building relationships and gaining commitment. This program can be modified to include multi-cultural team members.

Cultural Diversity Workshops
Building on the cross-cultural complexity of domestic workforces, topics may include cross-cultural communication, workgroup effectiveness, and recruitment and retention.

Cultural Detective®
Cultural Detective® is a dynamic tool and system that develops intercultural competence in individuals and organizations. It incorporates blended learning of classroom and online functions. Don is co-author of the Canadian module. Both Ellen and Don are certified facilitators.

Recruiting and Retaining Culturally Different Employees
Recruiters from human resources, senior management and functional line managers will benefit from this program. Cultural challenges and solutions are presented for each stage – resume, interview, integration and promotion.

Repatriation
The returning employee and family are provided information and tools to help them successful reintegrate into Canadian society. Applying newly acquired knowledge and skills to workplace, social and educational roles are key components of this program.

Other intercultural services include Executive Briefings, Coaching, Managing Remote Teams, Off-Site Workgroup Meetings, Candidate Self-assessment, Canadian Business Culture, as well as developing programming for your unique cross-cultural business topic.
